Original WWI ANZAC Mounted Division Christmas Greeting Card – 1917

An original World War I (WWI) ANZAC Mounted Division Christmas greeting card dating to 1917, produced during the Palestine Campaign for members of the Australian and New Zealand Mounted Division serving in the Middle East.

The card commemorates the Division's remarkable wartime service through Egypt (1914), Gallipoli (1915), Sinai (1916), and Palestine (1917), with the campaign timeline printed inside. The delightful illustration titled "A Dinkum Xmas 1917" depicts two ANZAC soldiers dressed as ration boxes, capturing the humour and resilience that helped sustain morale during the First World War.

The card bears a handwritten Christmas greeting reading:

"Wishing you a happy Christmas and prosperous New Year."

It is signed "George" and addressed to "Auntie Annie", providing a touching reminder of the personal connections maintained between serving soldiers and loved ones at home.

An attractive original piece of ANZAC military ephemera that will appeal to collectors of World War I memorabilia, New Zealand and Australian military history, wartime Christmas greetings and original military paper collectibles.

Historical Context

Unlike commercial Christmas cards produced for the general public, this greeting was issued specifically for members of the ANZAC Mounted Division during active service in the Middle East. The printed campaign list records the Division's journey through Egypt, Gallipoli, Sinai and Palestine, while the light-hearted illustration reflects the humour soldiers used to maintain morale during wartime.

More than a century later, it survives as a personal reminder of Christmas spent far from home during one of the defining campaigns of the First World War.

Condition

Original 1917 ANZAC Mounted Division Christmas greeting card in good antique condition for its age.

The card remains complete and displays well. There is light foxing, age toning, handling wear, gentle creasing and minor rubbing consistent with over a century of careful preservation. The central fold shows some separation at both the top and bottom edges, together with a small brown stain along the fold, but the card remains complete overall with no major tears or repairs noted. The handwritten Christmas greeting remains clear and legible.

Please study all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description and condition.

Packaging

This card will be packaged with great care.

It will be placed inside an archival-quality protective sleeve, sandwiched securely between rigid cardboard to prevent bending, protected against moisture, and shipped in a sturdy mailer using a tracked postal service.
