Listing: 2 x candleholders made from wooden, reclaimed architectural columns.

Condition: Used, antique condition. No original packaging, no instructions. Made from antique wooden architectural columns, that have converted into candleholders. The wooden columns are estimated to be from circa 1845–1900. The conversion into candleholders is thought to have happened circa 1920s - 1960s. Structurally the items are still okay, with surface wear, wood wear, surface marks from age and some wood cracks on the items. The carvings were created by hand, so there are some imperfections to the design and then wear to the carvings from the age of the item. There are some remnants of candle wax on these items. 

These items can still be used as candleholders, or as aesthetic decoration on their own. From smoke-free and pet free premises.

Pair of Antique Victorian Gothic Revival Carved Oak Columns

Later Converted into Decorative Candle Holders

Circa 1845–1875

A wonderful pair of genuine antique carved oak columns dating to the Victorian Gothic Revival period. These beautifully hand-carved pieces were almost certainly originally made as architectural or furniture components before being sympathetically converted into decorative candle holders during the 20th century.

The carving features bold Gothic Revival scrollwork to both the capitals and bases with elegant turned central columns, all displaying the rich colour and aged patina that only genuine Victorian oak develops over time.

Although their exact original purpose is unknown, they are believed to have formed part of either a substantial Gothic Revival piece of furniture or an ecclesiastical furnishing such as a church or chapel fitting.

Today they make an impressive pair of decorative candle holders and would suit Victorian, Gothic, Arts & Crafts, country house or ecclesiastical interiors.

Condition

Good antique condition with the age-related wear, marks and patina expected from pieces of this age.

The candle recesses are later additions, indicating the columns were repurposed during their lifetime. There are natural age-related shrinkage cracks within the oak and minor historic knocks and surface wear, all consistent with genuine Victorian timber and adding to their authentic character. No structural repairs or modern replacement components have been identified.
