Rare and highly decorative antique framed John Speed county map of Nottinghamshire with accompanying descriptive text leaf, after the famous engravings by Jodocus Hondius.
This impressive double sided display features:
• Hand coloured map titled “The Countie of Nottingham described”
• Original period style cartouches, coats of arms and battle scene engraving
• Reverse side descriptive Nottinghamshire text leaf from The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine
• Publisher line for John Sudbury and George Humble
• Dated within plate 1610
The paper shows strong signs of age including central atlas fold, period paper translucency and reverse text show through consistent with early engraved atlas leaves. The engraving detail and colouring are beautifully crisp throughout.
Presented in an older wooden reversible frame allowing display of either side.
Good antique condition for age with expected age toning, fold wear, light marks and some historic reinforcement/repair visible to centre fold on text side.
