Commonly known as the White Stem or Himalayan Birch, Betula jacquemontii is a premier choice for garden design. Originally discovered in the Himalayas and named after French naturalist Victor Jacquemont, this variety is celebrated for its elegant form and luminous, brilliant white bark that almost appears to glow. A famous stand of thirty trees at Anglesey Abbey highlights its dramatic impact, where the bark is regularly cleaned for maximum effect.

Beyond its striking winter silhouette, the tree boasts beautiful autumn interest as its leaves turn a vibrant golden yellow. It bears separate male and female catkins on the same plant. While birches are shorter-lived than giants like the oak, they grow rapidly to early maturity, making them ideal for gardens requiring immediate visual impact.

After 20 years, it reaches a height of 8 to 12 meters with an eventual spread of about 4 meters. Fully hardy, it prefers medium to wet soil but reliably adapts to warmer, dryer climates. It serves beautifully as a standalone feature tree in smaller spaces or family gardens, as well as in striking group plantings.
