Rare hand made brass canister, estimated to date from the late 1800s, for holding coffee cups. This canister would have had a small chain linking the finial of the lid with the hole in the side of the canister originally, could easily add a replacement. Coffee cups were stored inside, wrapped in fabric, often together with matches and kindling for making a fire.Traditionally used both in the levant and Arabian peninsula. Lid still has a nice firm press fit. The canister body is decorated with a band of  interlocking Y shapes, forming a continuous grid, symbolic of the islamic Tawhid (unity of all things).
