Wakizashi in Shirasaya.

Signed: 政廣作 Masahiro Saku.

Ko-Mihara Masahiro (Bingo Province): Masahiro was an early swordsmith of the "Mihara School," which flourished in Bingo Province (present-day Hiroshima Prefecture) from the late Kamakura period through the Nanboku-cho period. The Mihara School of this era is known as "Ko-Mihara" (Old Mihara) and is held in exceptionally high regard. Background: He is said to have been the son or a kinsman of "Masaie," the founder of the Mihara School. His signature typically reads "Bishu-ju Masahiro saku" (Made by Masahiro, resident of Bingo Province). Style and Characteristics: His works often feature the long dimensions (tachi style) suited for actual combat—typical of the Kamakura and Nanboku-cho periods—though the majority have survived to the present day as *katana* after undergoing *suriage* (shortening/re-shaping). Inheriting the Yamato tradition, his swords are prized by connoisseurs for their elegant, refined *ji-nie* (surface grain particles) and *hamon* (temper lines) featuring beautiful *kinsuji* (golden streaks).
