Original city map of San Francisco.
The map provides a detailed street plan of San Francisco and includes: a complete street index printed along the top and right margins, the city's numbered grid and street names, major thoroughfares highlighted in blue, streetcar and public transportation routes, parks, military installations, and public buildings, piers and waterfront facilities along San Francisco Bay. Several notable landmarks are clearly identified, including Golden Gate Park, The Presidio, Fort Mason, Lincoln Park, Hunters Point Naval Docks (U.S. Naval Docks), the Pacific Ocean shoreline and San Francisco Bay.
Although no publication date is visible on the photographed side, several features provide useful dating clues: the inclusion of Hunters Point U.S. Naval Docks, a designation commonly used during and after World War II, the absence of modern freeways such as Interstate 280 and the Embarcadero Freeway system, the cartographic style and typography. These characteristics suggest a publication date in the late 1940s to early 1950s, most likely circa 1950–1955.
