"Shipr" is an iconic Soviet fragrance (most commonly produced as eau de Cologne, and less frequently as perfume) that became a symbol of men's fragrances in the USSR.

The Soviet "Shipr" was not a unique invention of the USSR. It was a copy of the famous *Chypre* fragrance, created by French perfumer François Coty in 1917. The name was derived from the island of Cyprus (known as *Chypre* in French), where the fragrance's key ingredient—oakmoss—was harvested. In the Soviet Union, the Novaya Zarya factory adapted the formula for mass production.

The Soviet "Shipr" belonged to the group of classic chypre fragrances and possessed a very strong, long-lasting, rich, and fresh scent. Top notes: bergamot. Heart notes: patchouli, sandalwood, labdanum. Base note: oakmoss (imparting a characteristic earthy, forest-like nuance to the fragrance).

In addition to the classic "Chypre," the USSR produced other popular perfumes and colognes with a chypre base: "Pikova Dama" (Queen of Spades)—a deep, feminine fragrance from the Novaya Zarya factory; and "Kristina" and "Mif"—Soviet-Latvian chypre variations from the Dzintars factory. Today, the original Soviet "Chypre" is considered a collector's item. Modern versions currently on the market differ significantly from the vintage originals due to the ban on using natural oakmoss in perfumery (it has been replaced by synthetic alternatives).
