A 1970s ceramic tile by the American artist Mark Bulwinkle (born 1946). This ceramic piece depicts an abstract face composed of a rectangular design with single green and pink eye and a rectangular mouth. The tile is mounted on a black wooden background and has a black wooden frame.
Born in Waltham, Massachusetts, Bulwinkle studied at the University of Pittsburgh as well as the San Francisco Art Institute. He learned welding while living in San Francisco and worked as an industrial welder at Bethlehem Ship Yards until he became a full time artist in the 1980s. Bulwinkle is considered part of the West Coast Funk movement, an art movement that was in reaction to abstract expressionism and its non-objectivity.
