Antique St. John of Nepomuk Figural Whale Oil Lamp with Night-Hour Indicator

Offered for sale is a rare and unusual antique Central European figural whale oil lamp depicting St. John of Nepomuk, the patron saint of Bohemia and one of the most recognizable saints of the Czech lands.

The identification is based on the saint’s distinctive finger-to-lips gesture, symbolizing his refusal to violate the seal of confession, an iconographic attribute strongly associated with St. John of Nepomuk. The figure is rendered in polychrome and mounted atop an elegant pewter lamp form that combines religious imagery with early lighting technology.

Particularly noteworthy is the lamp’s unusual metal-framed reservoir assembly, believed to have functioned as a burn-time or night-hour indicator. Such devices allowed the user to monitor remaining fuel and estimate the progression of the night while the lamp burned. This feature elevates the piece beyond a simple devotional object, placing it within the history of domestic and study lighting.
