Signed: 一竿子忠綱 Ikkanshi Tadatsuna.

Ikkanshi Tadatsuna as a Swordsmith of the Edo Period A genius swordsmith who was active in Settsu Province (present-day Osaka) during the mid-Edo period (around the Genroku era) and is representative of the "Osaka Shinto" (new sword) school. Reputation as a Master Craftsman: His swords were selected as "Yokiwazamono" (excellent work) for their superior sharpness and are ranked as "Shinto Jojosaku" (highest rank of Shinto swords) - the highest rank of the Shinto period. Outstanding Blade Engraving: What made him most famous was the magnificent engraving he applied to the blades of his swords (esoteric Buddhist paintings, dragons, plum trees, etc.). Works inscribed with "Horidosaku" (engraved by himself), in which he also did the engraving, are highly regarded as works of art.

He is one of the most highly regarded master swordsmiths in the history of Japanese swords. The son (second generation) of the first generation Omi-no-kami Tadatsuna, a master of Osaka Shinto swords, he later adopted the name "Issanshi." Along with Tsuda Echizen-no-kami Sukehira and Inoue Shinkai, he built the golden age of Osaka Shinto swords. Excellent Shinto swords, superior quality: His swords are highly ranked (sometimes described as the finest Shinto swords), and are designated as "excellent quality" swords with outstanding sharpness. Outstanding blade carvings: The intricate carvings of dragons, plums, and other motifs that he himself carves on the blades are praised as "Issanshi carvings," and have become so synonymous with his work that it is said, "Don't buy an Issanshi without carvings." A sword of historical significance: In 1784, during the Tenmei era, the large short sword used by Sano Zen'emon to attack Tanuma Okitsugu's son (Tanuma Okitomo) inside Edo Castle was made by Tadatsuna, and it was greatly praised by the citizens of Edo as a symbol of social reform.
