There was the Volcanic Souvenir Fad from approximately 1905 to the 1920's. The most famous instance of intentionally scorching postcards happened in Hawaii. Tourists visiting the Kilauea volcano on the Island of Hawaii would walk out onto the hard crust of active lava flows and thrust their cards into volcanic fissures using sticks to scorch the edges before mailing them.
