What is a grid choke?

In brief, a grid choke is:
A high-inductance coil that provides extremely high impedance to AC signals while maintaining very low DC resistance.
Why is it used?
In every tube amplifier, and with every tube, you will find a grid resistor—typically 50kΩ or 100kΩ—connected to ground.
The grid resistor provides a reference voltage for the grid.
A grid choke is used as a replacement for this resistor.
Does the grid resistor affect sound quality?
In most designs, the grid resistor seems insignificant, and it’s true that you won’t hear much difference when replacing a cheap resistor with an expensive one.
However, replacing the resistor with a grid choke makes a big difference.
You may be surprised by how much musical information is normally lost.
A grid choke presents very high AC impedance, preventing signal loss, while its low DC resistance provides the grid with a stable reference to ground.
