Very large antique map of Balkans at the beginning of 20th century. The portraits provide the key dating evidence. Visible rulers include Mehmed V (Ottoman Empire), Peter I of Serbia, Ferdinand I of Bulgaria, George I of Greece, and Nicholas I of Montenegro. The First Balkan War involved Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece, and Montenegro, against the Ottoman Empire. The war dramatically reduced Ottoman control in Europe and helped create the modern political geography of the Balkans.This map was intended as a popular educational aid for newspaper readers following the conflict.

The central map covers Balkan Peninsula, Ottoman territories, Greece, Serbia, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Albania, Romania and surrounding regions. The side panels shows in left, Turkey and Bulgaria with portraits and military uniforms, in right, Serbia, Greece and Montenegro, with portraits of monarchs and soldiers.


The map is designed and engraved especially for the small newspaper, "Le Petit Journal", a popular daily newspaper of the Third Republic, published between 1863 and 1944.

Condition : good condition, small repairs on lower part and in upper margin, laid on linen.
