Wakizashi in Shirasaya.

NBTHK KICHO.

Signed: 無銘(宇多) Mumei ( Uda ).

Uda refers to a school of Japanese swordsmiths (the Uda school) that flourished in Etchu Province (present-day Toyama Prefecture) from the late Kamakura period to the Muromachi period, as well as the swords they produced. Originally from Uda District in Yamato Province (present-day Nara Prefecture), they migrated to Etchu Province, hence the name. Known for their practical and robust "simple yet sturdy" swords, they remain highly regarded by many enthusiasts today.

The name of a Uda-ha sword changes depending on the era in which it was made. Ko-Uda: Works from the late Kamakura period to the Nanboku-cho period (before the Oei era). Uda: Works from the early Muromachi period (after the Oei era) to the Sengoku period. The founder is said to be a swordsmith named Ko-nyudo Kunimitsu, and his children and disciples, such as Kunimune, Kunifusa, and Kunitsugu, have continued the name for generations, leading to a long period of prosperity.
