Retains a phenomenal original surface, the exterior boasts its original chrome green painted finish, which has aged over the past two centuries into a deeply crackled and beautifully alligatored patina. Along the lower edges and base, natural wear has gently exposed an underlying, original red iron oxide wash. This stunning layered surface provides an unrepeatable, textbook example of authentic historical wear that simply cannot be faked.

The craftsmanship of this small-stature utilitarian trunk is exceptional. It features meticulous, hand-cut narrow needle-pin dovetails on all four corners, elevating the piece from a simple nailed utility box to a highly skilled work of early cabinetry. The sides are fitted with robust, hand-forged wrought iron bail handles set into classic heart/kidney-shaped backplates. These handles show wonderful oxidation and hammer marks from the original blacksmith. The interior wood is remarkably clean, remaining "in the white" (unpainted) with a warm honey color, showing early scud marks from a hand plane, and retaining a nice sweet, clean, old-growth wood aroma entirely free of musty or smoky odors.

In terms of condition, the chest is structurally tight and sound, exhibiting the expected superficial scuffs, character marks, and shrinkage gaps consistent with an authentic piece of this age. The bottom retains its original wide boards. The interior hinges are later 19th-century replacements utilizing slotted steel screws—a common historical upgrade that allows the lid to function smoothly. No key for the lock.

Came out of a home built in 1818.
