A rare survivor - an original tool of Enlightenment-era scientific publishing
Genuine mid-18th century engraved copper printing plate depicting a land surveyor using a plane table and alidade, dating to approximately 1750–1780. A scarce survivor from the Georgian era of scientific illustration and early cartography.
Features
Original copper printing plates from the 18th century survive in far smaller numbers than printed engravings, as many were later melted down or reworked. Scientific and surveying subjects are particularly desirable due to their connection with Enlightenment-era engineering, cartography, and exploration.
