A striking egg shaped Caithness Glass paperweight titled Coral Fronds, designed by Philip Chaplin and issued in 1999. This attractive modern design paperweight combines bold colour, intricate internal decoration and precise craftsmanship, creating a highly distinctive example of contemporary Scottish studio glass.

The design features a yellow suspended dome above a central floating bubble, with sweeping white coral-like forms arranged beneath. Hundreds of controlled air bubbles are incorporated throughout the composition, while rich cobalt blue glass forms a dramatic border around the piece. The overall effect evokes underwater coral formations illuminated by sunlight, giving the paperweight remarkable depth and visual impact from every angle.

Caithness Glass was founded in Scotland in 1961 and became internationally renowned for its innovative art glass and collectible paperweights. Philip Chaplin was responsible for a number of contemporary designs that explored colour, movement and abstract natural forms. Coral Fronds was issued in 1999 as an edition of 750 pieces. The edition was subsequently closed at just 435 examples, making it considerably scarcer than originally intended. This example is individually numbered 109.

Size: Approximately 9.5 cm tall x 7 cm wide approximately

It has a weight of 720 g

A desirable addition to any Caithness Glass collection and an attractive display piece for collectors of Scottish studio glass, modern paperweights and contemporary glass art.
