Title of the map:
"XVII Provinciae Belgii sive Germaniae Inferioris ... Matthaei SEUTTER..."
Large nice copper engraved map of the XVII Provinces, by Matheus SEUTTER (1678-1757). The region historically known as the Seventeen Provinces covers parts of what are now the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and France. The colors delineate different territories, enhancing the clarity of political boundaries and administrative divisions of the time. This region was politically significant in the early modern period. This area was a focal point of economic and cultural activity and experienced significant political changes during the 16th and 17th centuries, including the Eighty Years' War and the subsequent division into the Spanish Netherlands and the Dutch Republic.
The map contains richly decorated cartouches. The main cartouche in the upper left corner lists the title and publication details. It is adorned with allegorical figures, likely representing classical virtues or the four continents, a common motif in maps of this era. Above the main cartouche, several coats of arms are depicted, representing ruling houses or significant regions within the map’s coverage. A compass rose is present, aiding orientation, and a scale bar indicates distances, essential for understanding the geographical scope.
SEUTTER began his career as an apprentice under tutelage of JB Homann. Then, he left Homann to establish his own independent cartographic publishing firm in Augsburg. He was one of the most prolific Publishers of his time and was honored by the German Emperor Charles VI, with the title of "Imperial Geographer".
