During World War II and the Nazi occupation of Paris (1940-1944), the painter decided to remain in the French capital rather than flee to America. Despite being under constant surveillance by the Gestapo due to his left-wing sympathies and anti-classical artistic style, he decided to purchase German banknotes and use them as artworks in memory of his past.

These rare banknotes, stored for years in the studios of gallery owner Tim Hunt (famous former director of the Andy Warhol Foundation),

purchased ownership of them.

They bear the SPADEM PARIS stamp.

The Nazi regime considered Picasso's works "dangerous," "decadent," and "anti-Aryan." As a result, he was absolutely banned from displaying in public.

The back of the banknote bears the TIM HUNT authenticity stamp and a certificate of authenticity.
