Victorian Silver Mourning Locket and Chain In Exceptional Condition
A fabulous Victorian mourning locket and chain consisting of an unmarked silver mourning locket with a black enamel cross bearing the words IN MEMORY OF, with engraved decoration around the enamel and a plain, polished silver back. The locket opens to reveal to reveal two photo compartments with blue fabric backing. One compartment is glazed, the other has no glass. The locket is suspended from a 24" 60cm heavy silver oval link chain, with a bolt ring fastener stamped STERLING. The bail of the locket is enamelled to the front.
This lovely, sentimental piece is beautifully designed, with the silver lettering shining in the black enamelled cross, the outer edges of which are lightly textured silver, with the black enamel continuing around the cross in lovely curving lobes, surrounded by curves of plain silver and then decorated to each corner with engraved patterns, The curving front design is all enclosed by a deeply inset patterned silver border. The back of the locket is the same curving shape, with no decoration but for the same inset border around the edge. The mourning theme is continued in the bail of the locket, which is a lovely, large oval of silver, tastefully enamelled in black to the front and plain silver to the back. A gorgeous, touching and well-made example of Victorian mourning jewellery, with a message that is as resonant today as it ever was.
The locket is in very good condition with the enamel almost perfect and no dents or dings. Bolt ring in good working order. Hinges and closure also in outstanding condition. Looks to have hardly been worn.
