It does light up and uses 3 AA batteries. 3 batteries are already inside to get you started but may not last too long.

I bought it used and over two years ago and enjoyed using it for two Christmas seasons . It does add nicely to your Christmas decor of you know how to work with it. It's missing parts but it isn't too bad.
