A very attractive and unique NWC potlach bowl with handles. Large size at approximately 25” long, 5.5” across middle, and 8” tall. From an old Cape Cod, MA collection. The collection consisted of many amazing early baskets and some great pottery. Nearly all of it early 20th century. The estate also featured a nice early totem pole collection. Again mostly first half 20th century. This bowl is a bit tricky to date. I’d think it stretches back well into 19th century if not earlier. It has a great old patina. Wood objects like this can be hard to pin down. It does have a tiny bit of insect damage on the bottom. This is typically found on very old wood. I’ve never seen on anything 20th century or newer. There is a crack under the right handle in the first listing photo. Looks typical of very old wood that has undergone many variations in environmental conditions. The crack is no danger of causing any further damage to the bowl. It does not go all the way through to o the inside of the bowl. It stays close to the surface of the wood. There are some other small age related cracks. There are two small nails driven into the handle above the previously mentioned crack. They don’t seem to serve any purpose at all that I can see. I have absolutely no idea why they were out there. Overall the vessel is in amazing condition I’d say. There is no damage that is not just expected age related wear. I think the wood might benefit from an overall application of oil. It would hydrate the wood and improve its appearance. However I wanted to let the new owner decide if that’s something they wanted to do rather than make the decision for them. Mineral oil and linseed are two common oils for this type of application but others may be beneficial as well. This piece came with no additional provenance unfortunately. Some of the baskets and totems came from the contiguous Pacific Northwest. Some from Alaska, and some Canada. I’d think this bowl certainly came from one of those regions but I don’t know which specifically. Probably the contiguous PNW if I had to pick one. It would have been an amazing thing to see in situ. It would be very practical for carrying to a potlach. The handles make it very easy to transport. This an amazing piece will ship ASAP! Thanks!
