Hamada Atsuya was born in Mashiko in 1931, the third son of Shoji Hamada, one of Japan’s most important twentieth-century potters. He trained under his father before travelling to England to work at the Leach Pottery in St Ives between 1957 and 1958, an experience that strongly influenced his development. After returning to Japan, he worked within the Hamada pottery before establishing his own kiln in Mashiko around 1979. His work is characterised by strong, functional forms and a refined sense of proportion within the Mingei tradition. Although he held exhibitions in Japan, his career was cut short by his early death in 1986 at the age of 54, and his relatively limited output has since become increasingly sought after.
