An exceptional, unusual and rare antique George III English Newcastle sterling silver sugar vase; an addition to our Newcastle silverware collection

Description

This exceptional antique Georgian sterling silver vase has a bell-shaped form onto a circular spreading pedestal foot and square base.

The body of the antique silver vase is embellished with impressive bright cut engraved garland decoration, incorporating a shield shaped cartouche to one side.

The cartouche is encompassed with a fabric swag style border and ornamented with the contemporary bright cut engraved initials 'TR'.

The rim of the body is further ornamented with an applied reed decorated border.

This Newcastle silver sugar vase retains the original hallmarked domed push fit cover, embellished with a bright cut engraved decorated border.

The cover is surmounted with an exceptional cast and applied finial, modelled in the form of a griffin rampant.

The vessel is supported by a plain waisted pedestal and square base, each ornamented with further engraved decoration.

This exceptional Georgian sugar vase, crafted by the renowned Newcastle silversmiths John Langlands I & John Robertson I, is an unusual and rare example to locate from this provincial city.

The hallmarks struck to the underside of the foot are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver.
