Large unusual antique copper engraved map of Asia, prepared by Jean-Baptiste Nolin (1657-1708), and re-issued by Daumont.  

At the left and right margins, the map includes a detailed description of Asia in general, Tartary, Turkey, Arabia, Persia, India, China and archipelagos. An elaborate cartouche shows asiatic people with their symbols. The map is notable for its detail of Hokkaido, here still called “Yedso”. To the right the island “Terre de la Compagnie” and “Detroit d’Vries Terre des Estates, Kamchatka is shown correctly.



J-B Nolin is named geographe for the King Philippe II, then engraver for the King Louis XIV. He realised several plans of the Chateau de Versailles. He worked with Coronelli, and created his own factory in Paris, rue St Jacques.

Condition : very small repair in one place with slight erasure of the text, but good condition.
