It was originally established as a Sardinian award.

It is awarded to military personnel, units, and civilians for exceptional valor facing the enemy.

The medal has three levels: Gold, Silver, and Bronze.

The War Cross of Military Valor ranks below this medal.

It is awarded for acts of valor or devotion to duty in the presence of the enemy.
