Pair of Sheffield plate candlesticks dating to approximately 1830. Silver on copper for the plain sections, and silver on white metal repousse sections. These candlesticks appear to be made from 9 or 10 alternating parts. The sconces are removable, although one is on quite tightly so I removed just the other one for the photography.
Marked 'Warranted Silver Edges' inside the sconces, a term which was used in circa 1830 advertising. These candlesticks are from the last period of sheffield plate, before electroplating took over from the 1840s onwards. The plating is in better than average shape, with just a little copper showing through on the base, and white metal showing on the high points of the raised arabesque features, although you have to look carefully to notice. They are filled with some kind of resin, and are quite solid. The green felt on the base is clearly hand cut, and was attached by a previous owner in the 20th century. These are both beautiful display pieces and functional. Theyr'e also interesting historic specimens from a special period in metalware fabrication.
