The History of the "Severny" Bottle
In 1908, perfume factory owner Alexandre Brocard commissioned Malevich to design the packaging for his "Severny" cologne. Malevich needed money—at that time, he was not yet a renowned artist of Suprematist compositions. After the artist completed the bottle design, he handed over all his drawings to Adele Yakovlevna Yakobson. She was responsible for bottle production technology at the Bakhmetevsky Glass Factory.
Bottle Appearance
The "Northern" cologne was packaged in white frosted glass. The bottle resembled an iceberg, the cork topped with a polar bear figurine—the handle that opened the bottle cap. The bottle was 19.5 centimeters tall.
The Severny cologne was very popular. It was produced from 1911 until the early 1990s. However, the bottle's appearance changed virtually insignificantly over the years: before the Revolution, the iceberg's edges were concave, but later they were made convex.
