The densely-arranged lateral methyl groups in the butyl rubber molecular chain limit the thermal movement of polymer molecules. Therefore, low permeability and good air tightness.
Butyl rubber has very low water permeability, and its water absorption rate at room temperature is lower than that of other rubber, only 1/10-1/15 of the latter.
The molecular structure of butyl rubber lacks double bonds, and the distribution density of methyl group in the side chain is relatively high, so it has good vibration and impact energy absorption characteristics. The springback characteristics of butyl rubber under a wide temperature range (-30--50℃) are not more than 20%, which indicates that the mechanical property absorption ability of butyl rubber is superior to that of other rubber.
