Clemson University competes as a member of the NCAA Division I level (Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) sub-level for football), primarily competing in the ACC for all sports since the 1953–54 season. In 2020, university officials decided to dissolve its men's track and field and cross country teams at the end of the academic year. Despite pressure from student activists, the university did not reverse its decision until a class-action Title IX lawsuit was formed. Following pressure from state officials, the university reversed its decision on April 22, 2021. The university followed this by announcing the additions of women's lacrosse and gymnastics.
