  “SANE” refers to the Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy, one of the main American peace organizations of the 1960s. This Madison Square Garden crowd included students, union members, intellectuals, and peace activists. Some people had to listen outside via loudspeakers because the arena was full. It reflected growing national opposition to the Vietnam War in 1966, before the movement exploded even larger in 1967–1969.
