Benin City, originally known as Edo, was once the capital of a pre-colonial African empire located in what is now southern Nigeria. The Benin empire was one of the oldest and most highly developed states in west Africa, dating back to the 11th century.
Olfert Dapper (1635-1689) was a Dutch physician and writer. He wrote books of history and geography. His work "Description de l'Afrique" is indeed worth by the multiplicity and the exactitude of the details and by the general views. The entire continent is covered, the Islamic north, from Morocco to Egypt, Abyssinia, central and southern Africa, Madagascar, Malta, the Canary Islands and other islands along the African coast. No other work of his time could compare with it and it will remain among the sources that later geographers will use most often. His book is one of the most important work about Africa in 17th century.
