Wretched (Hardcore Punk)
Wretched was an Italian hardcore punk band formed in Milan in 1981. They were one of the most influential bands in the Italian hardcore scene, known for their raw, aggressive sound, breakneck tempos, and politically charged lyrics. Alongside bands like Raw Power, Negazione, and Indigesti, Wretched helped define the Italian hardcore movement, bringing a distinctly chaotic and anarchic approach to punk.
Sound & Legacy
Wretched’s music was characterized by frantic drumming, distorted guitars, and harsh, shouted vocals, embodying a sense of urgency and rebellion. Unlike many UK and US hardcore bands that incorporated more structured songwriting, Wretched leaned into anarcho-punk and D-beat influences, often sounding like an explosion of pure energy. Their lyrics tackled social unrest, anti-authoritarianism, and DIY ethics, aligning them with the global anarcho-punk and crust movements.
Their most well-known releases include:
"In Nome Del Loro Potere Tutto È Stato Fatto..." (1983, EP) – A blistering debut that established their high-speed, chaotic sound.
"Finirà Mai?" (1984, EP) – Further refined their raw, unrelenting attack.
"Libero Di Vivere, Libero Di Morire" (1984, LP) – Their most recognized album, a landmark in European hardcore.
"La Tua Morte Non Aspetta" (1986, EP) – Showed a slightly more refined but still aggressive approach.
Wretched was heavily involved in Italy’s DIY and squatter scene, often associated with the Virus squat in Milan, a hub for anarchist and punk activism. They disbanded in 1988, but their impact on European hardcore punk and crust punk remains significant, influencing later generations of bands.
