A very special pickle jar in green uranium glass with silver plate frame, lid and tongs (original). The base features a superbly executed design featuring palm fronds and human figures. The handle is decorated with granulation, disc elements, and a bird's head, with a fan on top. The lid finial is in the form of three round shields. Some of these elements are Etruscan in nature, possibly indicating the piece dates to the Etruscan revival design period in the 1860s to 1880s. The general style and quality of the silver plate elements, and the moulded pattern on the glass also indicate a pre-1900 provenance. The company (Meridan) goes back to at least the 1860s.
The plating and glass are in excellent condition. The finial is more of a dark colour, possibly indicating wear to plating on that part only, and there is a little indentation to the lid rim, which does not affect its fit.
This would make a great centerpiece to any uranium glass collection and will be sure to hold its value as an apex example of antique uranium glass tableware.
