Artist Notes: This canvas depicts a group of Native American teepees, bathed in the light of a full moon, in the majestic shadows of the Ice Age created granite monolith El Capitan. The teepees, glowing from the internal Native American family campfires, were the centers of family, friends...of social/political gatherings, religious ceremonies, councils of war and reflection. In a time when many indigenous California tribes called Yosemite their homeland, as with the countless people who visit this sacred and unique land today, moments of joy and spiritual healing are captured and preserved for lifelong memories for those who are in presence of this icon of nature. The lighter color of the Granite stone that El Capitan is comprised of, reflects moonlight much better than the darker, more porous sandstones of the California desert regions.
