Listing: 1 x cast iron metal book press / bookbinder's nipping press.
Condition:
Description:
A substantial and original cast iron bookbinder’s nipping press, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century (circa 1880–1930).
This is a classic small workshop press of the type used in traditional bookbinding for compressing glued signatures, setting spines, and general finishing work. It is equally suitable for paper pressing, printmaking, leather work, or as a decorative industrial display piece.
Height: 12 inches (approx. 33 cm)
Width: 11 inches (approx. 28 cm)
Depth: 6 inches (approx. 16.8 cm)
Weight: 9.8 kg
Material: Solid cast iron
Unbranded / no visible maker’s marks
The press features a heavy arched frame with internal casting seams consistent with traditional sand-mould casting methods of the period. The threaded screw operates smoothly and provides excellent downward pressure. The T-handle and screw assembly are robust and in keeping with early industrial workshop manufacture.
There are no maker’s marks or foundry stamps visible, which is typical of many small regional foundry-produced presses from Britain or the United States during this period. This is a genuine working tool, not a modern reproduction.
