Barbapapa is an extravagant product of nature born in the garden of siblings Francesco and Carlotta. Due to his large size, he is locked up in the zoo where he tries to befriend the other animals. Unable to live in a cage, Barbapapa finds himself alone and without a place to sleep. When he manages to save the residents of a burning building thanks to one of his wonderful tricks, Barbapapa becomes a celebrity, and Francesco and Carlotta manage to convince their mother to let him return to live in their garden. Based on the comic book of the same name by Annette Tison and Talus Taylor (published in France since 1970), it was one of the first works capable of raising public awareness of ecological issues. The television adaptation (3 series for a total of 150 5-minute episodes) was entirely made in Japan, and in Italy it was broadcast on Rai Due from February 1978. The success that followed was so great that it generated an unlimited amount of merchandising and, to this day, it shows no signs of slowing down!
