This is a card inscribed, autographed and dated by four-star General Lucius D. Clay (1898-1978), a highly decorated officer of the U.S. Army and political adviser.
General Clay administered occupied Germany after World War 2, served as a deputy to General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1945, deputy military governor of Germany in 1946, Commander in Chief of the United States Forces in Europe and military governor of the United States Zone in German from 1947-1949. When the USSR blockaded West Berlin, General Clay orchestrated the 1948-1949 Berlin Airlift.
He encouraged his friend, General Eisenhower, to seek the presidency in 1952.
During the Berlin Crisis of 1961, President John F. Kennedy asked General Clay to be an adviser and go to Berlin and report on the situation. In 1963 General Clay accompanied the President to Berlin, where the President gave his famous "Ich bin ein Berliner speech and singled out General Clay by saying, "I am proud...to come here in the company of my fellow American, General Clay, who has been in this city during its great moments of crisis and will come again if ever needed". The mentioned received cheers from the hundreds of thousands gathered to hear the president.
In his own hand, General Clay wrote on this autographed card:
"To: Judge Braude-
If we maintain faith in the small things of life, we will meet each crisis with courage and hope.
Lucius D Clay
14 August 1951"
The recipient of this autograph, Jacob M. Braude (1896-1970) was a Chicago Municipal Court and Circuit Judge, autograph collector, and he published several books.
The autograph was authenticated by PSA/DNA and included is the PSA/DNA Letter of Grading and Authenticity. The Certification Number is AR00024. The autograph received PSA's highest grade, a rare perfect 10.
The card is affixed to a sheet of black construction paper, and affixed to the same sheet is a biography typed by a previous owner that reads:
"Gen. Lucius D. Clay (1897- ) Born in Marietta, GA Graduated from West Point in 1918. Made a 4 star general in 1947. In the 30's was Corps of Engineer officer on many major projects in the U.S. Was on General MacArthur's staff in Philippines in 1937. In WWII was asst. Chief of Staff of Army Services and dep. to Gen. Eisenhower. In 1947 became Commander of U.S. Forces in Europe and Military Governor of the U.S. Zone in Germany. Retired in 1949. 1961 was Pres. Kennedy's Special Representative during the Berlin Crisis."
The autographed card measures 3 &1/2" x 4 & 1/2" and the black sheet of paper measures 7 & 1/2" x 11".
