This pair of cassowary bone lime sticks originate from the East Sepik region of Papua New Guinea and represents a refined example of traditional betel-nut paraphernalia. Carefully shaped from dense cassowary bone each stick has been smoothed and polished through handling developing a warm lustrous patina. The crested tops have open work carving and one has a small piece missing off a carved ridge. The forms are slender and elegantly tapered suited for dipping into lime gourds and transferring lime during the preparation of betel nut. Subtle surface wear and natural variations in colour attest to prolonged use and age. Lime sticks of this type were personal objects often carried daily and sometimes imbued with individual or social significance. These examples measures from 38cm and 39cm in height.
