Nice antique copper engraved map of the gulf of Mexico and West Indies, by Rigobert Bonne (1727-1794). 

The main map covers the Caribbean region, known as the Antilles, and the Gulf of Mexico. It includes parts of the surrounding territories such as the southern United States, Mexico, Central America, and the northern coast of South America. The ocean currents are depicted using arrows, indicating a concern with navigation and the movement of ships. The inset map of Bermuda provides a detailed view of the islands, highlighting their strategic importance during the era of exploration and colonization.

This map was created during a period of extensive European exploration and colonization. The Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico were significant due to their roles in trade routes and colonial expansion. The map’s detail reflects the European powers' interest in these regions for their economic, strategic, and navigational importance.

Rigobert Bonne (1727-1794) was one of the most important French cartographers of the 18th Century. In 1773, Bonne succeded to Jacques-Nicolas Bellin as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the Hydrographer at the Depôt de la Marine. Bonne produced some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period. Bonne died in 1794, his son Charles-Marie Rigobert Bonne continued to publish his work after his death.
