Detailed antique copper engraved map of the Duchy of Milan, by Nicolas DE FER (1646-1720), 18th century.

This detailed map shows the vicinity of Milan, covering from Turin to Parma and including the alpine lakes. Among the many details on the map, are the canals. The Naviglio Canal was the first artificial canal in Europe, probably originating as a defensive ditch dug in the 12th century. It was one of the largest post-medieval engineering projects, allowing development of commerce, transport and agriculture in the region.

Nicolas De FER (1646-1720) is one of the most famous geographe of 18th century. His earliest wellknown map of the canal de Languedoc, realised in 1669. De Fer has created this map when he was in service of the King of France Louis XIV. In 1695, De Fer, with several other notable French mapmakers, became founding contributors to the French Bureau of Maps and Plans. In 1697, he published his first world atlas. This bureau, created to deal with the technical and strategic problems of overseas commerce and exploration, was part of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Ministry of the Navy and Colonies.
