This antique 1889 Chicago & North-Western Railway employee rule book is an original pocket handbook titled “Rules and Regulations for the Government of Employes of the Operating Department – To Take Effect May 1, 1889.” Measuring approximately 6.5” tall by 4.25” wide with 127 pages, it was issued to train service employees such as conductors and brakemen and includes detailed operating rules for train movements, signals, telegraph use, time tables, baggage handling, and employee conduct. The book features its original brown cloth-covered hard boards with red page edges, printed “General Notice” page signed in print by the General Superintendent and General Manager, a full index, and numerous numbered rules throughout.
Condition: Original covers show heavy wear, staining, fading, edge and corner rubbing, and some fraying at the spine ends consistent with age and use. The interior pages have age toning, scattered spots and soiling, and some handling wear, but the text remains clear and fully readable and the binding appears intact with no missing pages noted. The front endpaper shows period ink and pencil notations, including an 1889 date and the word “Brakeman,” suggesting it was carried by an actual railroad employee—great provenance for a railway collector.
This is a desirable piece of 19th century railroadiana and Chicago & North-Western Railway history, ideal for collectors of railroad rule books, transportation ephemera, and antique train memorabilia. A scarce original 1880s C&NW operating department rules and regulations book that displays well and offers a fascinating look at early railroad safety and operating procedures
