This is a traditional Japanese wall-mounted Hannya mask carving, created using the Ichii Itto-bori technique from the Hida region of Gifu Prefecture.

Ichii Itto-bori is a historic Japanese woodcarving craft in which a single chisel is used to carve precious ichii (Japanese yew) wood, the official prefectural tree of Gifu. The surface is left unpainted to highlight the natural grain and color contrast of the wood, a hallmark of this tradition.

The name “Ichii” originates from an episode over 800 years ago, when ichii wood was presented to an emperor during an enthronement ceremony and was awarded the highest court rank, “Sho-ichii,” in recognition of its beauty and quality.

This piece features a powerful Hannya mask carved in relief and mounted on a wooden backing board, accented with traditional red tassels. Over time, the wood develops a deeper tone and natural luster, enhancing its character and authenticity.
