* Description
This is a mini single-valve B♭ horn!
Pocket horns are not the type of French horn designed as so-called beginner instruments.
Please note: we do not recommend purchasing them solely because they are inexpensive for children or beginners to use for practice.
This pocket horn is even smaller than the popular BFH-600 model, known for being a slightly smaller horn. Its compact coiled design makes it highly portable.
Its tone is very soft and pleasant, making it enjoyable as a substitute when ultra-high notes are needed in an ensemble. However, due to its extremely compact size, even experienced players may find it somewhat challenging to achieve stable pitch.
A standard horn mouthpiece is included.
While smaller instruments might seem easier to play than larger ones, they are actually more challenging than standard-sized instruments.
A smaller instrument means less air can enter it, requiring the player to maintain a steady, stable airflow with less breath for every note.
Previously, on TV Asahi's “Music Without a Title,” Mr. Teihō performed using this pocket horn.
His performance on stage, playing such a very small instrument, drew attention and became a hot topic overnight.
It is a rare instrument, and even among well-known manufacturers, it isn't included in their standard lineup. Therefore, using it for serious professional performances might be difficult. However, it is extremely popular among horn players and is often chosen as a gift.
Another point to note about this tiny horn concerns maintenance.
Among wind instruments, horns require particularly careful upkeep, and many types of oil are used.
Leaving moisture inside after playing is the worst enemy for any wind instrument. However, the horn's structure makes removing internal moisture inherently difficult. Horns without a spit valve require the player to spin the instrument around to drain the water.
Even experienced players find it difficult to thoroughly dry this compact horn.
We've encountered issues like “It stopped working even though I barely played it after receiving it.” Conversely, “not playing it” can also cause problems.
If oil isn't properly applied and moisture isn't thoroughly removed, followed by long-term storage, rust will form.
Just like with electronics, not using it doesn't mean it won't break down. Please keep this in mind.
【General Characteristics of the B♭ Single Horn】
It features a bright, light playing feel.
Compared to the F single horn, it's easier to blow into and has a clear attack.
It produces beautiful high notes, making it recommended for solos.
Like the F single horn, it's still a relatively light and easy-to-handle instrument.
It is tuned a fourth higher than an F horn, and sheet music is written in F, requiring transposition.
However, with wind ensembles becoming mainstream in recent years, and beginners often practicing alongside B♭ instruments like trumpets, it has become increasingly common for beginners to start with a B♭ single horn rather than an F single.
