Listing: 1 x brass metal spring-action aide-memoire notebook with 1 x matching brass metal propelling mechanical pencil. Includes some original pages with gilt, gold coloured edges.

Condition: Used, antique condition. No original packaging, no instructions. The spring-action mechanism is fully working. The propelling mechanism on the pencil is working. This includes some (not all) of the original papers with the gilt, gold coloured edges. No hallmarks and no branding. There are surface changes and changes to colour on the brass surface. There are some areas of darkening to the surface colour. There are light / shallow surface marks on the metal of both items. This is still functional, although given its collector value, it would be better off being collected to preserve the current condition of this item. From smoke-free and pet free premises.

Description: Antique Victorian brass spring-action aide-mémoire notebook with its original matching twist propelling pencil, dating from circa 1890–1905.

This is a high-quality mechanical pocket notebook, designed so that the removal of the pencil releases an internal spring, causing the notebook to open automatically. The pencil serves as both the writing instrument and the locking mechanism — a refined and sought-after Victorian mechanical design.

The interior retains its original paper tablets with gilt (gold-finished) page edges, a feature associated with higher-grade examples of this type and indicative of a more luxurious original finish. The gilt edges remain clearly visible and confirm the contents are original and unaltered.

The notebook is of solid brass construction with a chatelaine / watch-chain ring, intended for wear or attachment. The matching brass propelling pencil operates via a twist mechanism, advancing and retracting the graphite smoothly.

No maker’s marks are present, which is common for late-19th-century German or Austrian export pieces of this type. Overall, this is a complete, functional, and well-preserved example of late Victorian writing ephemera.

A fine collector-grade piece, equally suitable for private collections, display, or institutional / museum acquisition.
