Victorian Birmingham Sterling Silver Floral Thimble – James Swann 1890

Listing: 1 x Sterling silver 925 metal thimble with floral details, made by J.S James Swann, hallmarked 1890.

Condition: Antique, used condition. Hallmarked as the year 1890 (letter Q), making this item 135 years old. No original packaging, no instructions. The hallmarks can still be identified, easier with a magnifying device. No cracks. There is one small hole in the side from historical use, typical of antique silver thimbles. No repair works and no solder. There is some shallow surface wear on the outside, and some wear to the inside including some darkening with age and use, and some marks from needle use. This item can still be used functionally, although it might be better for collections to help preserve the details of this item. From smoke-free and pet free premises.

Description: A fine Victorian sterling silver sewing thimble by the noted Birmingham silversmith James Swann, a maker particularly associated with high-quality decorative thimbles of the late 19th century.

Hallmarks:
• Lion passant – sterling silver
• Anchor – Birmingham Assay Office
• Date letter Q1890
• Maker’s mark J·S – James Swann

The thimble is attractively decorated with a dense all-over floral repoussé pattern, characteristic of Birmingham production in the late Victorian period. The design is crisply worked, with a smooth lower band reserved for the hallmarks, all of which remain clearly legible.

James Swann is a recognised specialist maker, and his Victorian thimbles are sought after by collectors of English silver and sewing antiques. This is a solid, well-documented piece, suitable for a focused thimble collection or a broader Victorian silver grouping.
