The Order of the Patriotic War (Russian: Одрен Отечественной война) is a Soviet combat award awarded to all soldiers of the Soviet armed forces, security forces and partisans for heroic deeds during the German-Soviet War, known in the former Soviet Union as the Great Patriotic War. The order was founded on May 20, 1942 and was first and second class depending on the merit of the act. It was the first Soviet order established during the war and the first Soviet order divided into classes. Its statute precisely defined which actions were awarded the order, e.g. The first class was assigned to the downing of three planes by a fighter pilot, or the destruction of two heavy, three medium or four light tanks, or the capture of a warship, or the repair of an aircraft under fire after landing in enemy territory, etc. It was also granted to some Allied troops and commanders, including the Western Allies. In total, more than 324,903 1st class and 951,652 2nd class were issued during the war. By 1985, the total number reached about 1,370,000. In 1985, during the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War, it was decided to award the order of the 2nd or 1st degree to all surviving war veterans, as well as about 2,054,000 persons of the first degree and 5,408,000 of the 2nd degree. were issued then. As of January 1992, the total number of all orders awarded was 2,487,098 orders of the first degree and 6,688,497 variants of the second degree. 

The Order of Nakhimov (Russian: «Орден Нахимова») is a military decoration of the Russian Federation named in honour of Russian admiral Pavel Nakhimov (1802 - 1855) and bestowed to naval officers for outstanding military leadership. The order was established during World War II by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 3, 1944. Following the 1991 dissolution of the USSR, the Order of Nakhimov was retained unchanged by decision of the Supreme Soviet of the Russian Federation № 2424-1 of March 2, 1992 but it was not awarded in this form. The all encompassing Decree of the President of the Russian Federation № 1099 of September 7, 2010 that modernised and reorganised the entire Russian awards system away from its Soviet past amended the Order of Nakhimov to its present form, a ribbon mounted single class Order.
