Description:
This ornate Coalport jeweled and gilt porcelain box represents the height of English luxury porcelain during the late-Victorian to early-Edwardian era, circa 1891–1919. A fine example of Coalport’s famed jeweled ware, the box is richly embellished with raised turquoise enamel “jewels,” intricate gilt tracery, and alternating lattice reserves over a soft cream ground. The domed lid is finished with a sculpted finial and broad gilt banding, all hand-decorated in burnished gold.
Each turquoise enamel dot was individually applied by hand — a labor-intensive process that defined Coalport’s elite production of the period. The result is a dazzling play of texture and light characteristic of the Aesthetic and early Art Nouveau movements.
Although the piece shows age and wear, it retains exceptional decorative appeal. The repair to one corner is stable and unobtrusive, the gilding shows minor expected wear, and the base displays normal toning from age and use. A rare and desirable survivor of Coalport’s jeweled gilt period, ideal for display on a vanity, mantel, or within a porcelain cabinet.
