The luxurious drapery (tassels, cords) refers to academies and scholarly institutions. the earth globe and armillary sphere represent geography, astronomy, the description of the world used in school atlases. The compass, the ruler and the square symbolize measurement, mathematics, scientific accuracy. They remind us that mapping is a geometric science. An open book is placed on a bookstand symbolizing the transmission of knowledge. The writing feathers, the inkwell, the scrolled sparchemins refer to literature, ancient manuscripts, to the work of scholars. The laurel branches represent the sciences and the arts.
